Milk Paint by Fusion™ and Homestead House Milk Paint

Milk Paint is one of my favourite finishes to work with when I want an authentic, natural look with beautiful movement, depth and character. It is incredibly versatile and perfect for creating anything from a soft wash of colour to an aged chippy finish. In this collection I have brought together both Milk Paint by Fusion and Homestead House Milk Paint, because although they have different colour palettes, the formulas are made by the same family company and work in exactly the same way.

Homestead House is the original Canadian manufacturer of milk paint and has been producing high quality, zero VOC paint since 1989. Their traditional palette includes historic, rich and timeless shades inspired by heritage homes and classic interiors.

Milk Paint by Fusion was created by the same team but offers a more modern, curated colour range. These shades are fresh, bright, bold and perfect for contemporary spaces or creative statement pieces.

Because both products come from the same parent company, you get the same quality, the same beautiful finish and the same reliable performance from either range. The only difference is the colour palette you choose.

Milk paint is amazing for porous wood, raw timber and textured finishes. If you want crackle, chipping or an aged look, this is the easiest and most effective way to get those results naturally.

Homestead House Milk Paint

Homestead House offers a heritage inspired palette with traditional colours that work beautifully in vintage, farmhouse, cottage, rustic and classic interiors. This range is perfect for timeless pieces and those who love historical or muted tones.

Milk Paint by Fusion

Milk Paint by Fusion has a more contemporary, curated palette with modern, bright, bold and in-between shades designed to suit up-to-date interiors and creative projects. If you want a fresh, clean or playful look, these colours are wonderful to work with.

How to Use Milk Paint

Milk paint comes in powdered form and is mixed with water. You can control the consistency to create anything from a thin stain-like wash to a thicker opaque coating.

You can leave the paint to naturally chip on non-porous surfaces or add Bonding Agent for a more controlled, modern finish. Once dry, milk paint is sealed with wax, oil or other suitable topcoats. If you are unsure what look you want to achieve, I am always happy to help with advice.

Why Buy Milk Paint From Me

I use milk paint frequently in my own commission work and workshops, so I can help guide you through colours, techniques and finishes. Whether you are aiming for a traditional chippy look or something more modern and smooth, I can help you choose the right colours and products for your project.

Milk Paint FAQ

What is milk paint?

Milk paint is a natural powdered paint made from milk protein, limestone, clay and pigments. I mix it fresh with water which gives a beautiful, natural finish with real character. You can create smooth modern looks or an authentic chippy finish depending on how you apply it.

How do I mix milk paint?

Mix equal parts powder and water, stir well and let it sit for a few minutes to fully dissolve. I adjust the thickness depending on the look I want. A thinner mix gives a washed effect and a thicker mix gives more coverage. It is very easy once you have tried it once or twice.

Do I need a bonding agent?

You only need bonding agent if your surface is very smooth or glossy and you do not want any chipping. On porous surfaces like raw wood, pine, oak or previously unsealed furniture, milk paint will absorb beautifully without any bonding agent at all.

Does milk paint always chip?

No. It only chips on non-porous surfaces when applied without bonding agent. If you want a smooth modern finish, just add bonding agent to your first coat.

What kind of finish does milk paint give?

Milk paint has a soft, velvety matte finish with incredible depth and movement. It looks authentic, natural and full of character. You can also layer colours for artistic effects.

Do I need to seal milk paint?

Yes. Milk paint must be sealed because it is porous by nature. I usually seal it with furniture wax, hemp oil, tung oil or a water-based topcoat depending on the look I want. Oils bring out richness and depth, while waxes give a soft traditional finish.

What surfaces can I use milk paint on?

You can use milk paint on raw wood, previously unsealed surfaces, prepped furniture, metal, glass and more. It adheres best to porous surfaces. For glossy furniture, you may want to scuff sand or use a bonding agent (AKA Ultra Grip).

How is Milk Paint by Fusion different from Homestead House Milk Paint?

The formulas are the same. Both are made by the same family company. The only difference is the colour palette. Homestead House offers traditional heritage colours, while Milk Paint by Fusion offers fresh, modern, bold shades. You can mix and match both ranges.

Can milk paint be used outdoors?

Yes. Once sealed with a penetrating oil like hemp oil or tung oil, milk paint becomes very durable and water-resistant. It is great for outdoor benches, plant stands and porch furniture.

How long does mixed milk paint last?

After mixing, milk paint lasts for about a week if kept in a sealed container in the fridge. The powder lasts indefinitely when kept dry.

Is milk paint eco friendly?

Yes. It is one of the most eco friendly and low VOC paints you can use. It is biodegradable, odourless and safe for children’s furniture, toys and nurseries once sealed.

Can I layer milk paint colours?

Absolutely. Milk paint is perfect for layering, distressing and creating aged or textured looks. The way it absorbs gives a beautiful artistic depth that is hard to achieve with other paints.

I’m new to milk paint. Can you help me choose colours or finishes?

Yes, of course. I use milk paint regularly in my commission work and workshops, so if you are unsure which colours or products you need, just get in touch and I will be happy to help.
